Press release from the directorate of libraries, archives and museums of Chile
Santiago, November 2007
1 .- The Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums (DIBAM), in line with the foreign policy of the government of President Michelle Bachelet Jeria, has formally decided on the Return of Books that were in the National Library of Chile and the Santiago Severín Library in Valparaiso, which were originally the property of the National Library of Lima (Peru).
2 .- This decision was taken after historical and bibliographic research and catalog searches. From this research, the Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums has concluded that 3,788 volumes or items of property of the former National Library of Lima have been found in units of the National Library of Chile and the Severín Library of Valparaiso, both entities of this Directorate.
This provenance of the books referred to above has been identified in a clear, conclusive and definitive way by - among other evidence - the presence of the Seal of the former Library of Lima, consisting of a stamp with the coat of arms of Peru and the legend "Biblioteca de Lima."
3 .- The decision to return these cultural assets to the present National Library of Peru reaffirms our deep commitment to the respect and appreciation of the culture of all peoples, especially those of neighboring countries.
4 .- This bibliographic heritage material was officially handed over by Ms Nivia Palma Manríquez (National Director of DIBAM and Director of the National Library of Chile) and Ms Ximena Cruzat (Deputy Director of the National Library of Chile) to Mr. Hugo Neyra, Director of the National Library of Peru, in a ceremony held in Lima, Peru, on Monday 5 November 2007.
